THE ROLE OF
SPICES IN THE WORLD
Christ claimed
that gods were
drinking sesame wine
at gathering held
just before they
made the earth.
From the Hieroglyphyics on
the walls of
the pyramids, to
the scriptures of the Bible,
we find constant
mention of the important
part spices played in
the lives of
the ancients.
For centuries,since 950B.C or earlier,
the Arabs were
the masters of
the trade. In
the old testament
of the Bible,
it is recorded “
the tradres of
Sheba and Roamah
traded the best
kind of spices
for the wares
and all kind
of precious stones
and gold”
Archeaologists estimate
that
by 50,000B.C. primitive
man had discovered
that certain aromatic
plants make food
taste better, so
men used some
aromatic leaves to
wrap the meat
and thick roots,
buried in the
hot pits to be cooked
, this not
only helped it
free of grit
and ashes but
found that the
leaves had given
new taste to
the meal, thus
mankind discovered the
art of seasoning
. The amazing
prestige of spices
came to the
lime light , a
dash of pepper,
a little cinnamon
or ginger, mixed
with even the
coarsest dishes could
make them palatable
and also used
for the storage
of food and fodder. The spices
were so costly
that only wealthy
people could afford
it, the seasoned
delicacies were served
at
Roman banquets, medicines
required great quantities
of spices and
herbs, bay leaves
were woven into the crowns for
the OLYMPIC heroes, Spice
scented balms were
used after baths,
spice flavored wines
were popular, incense
made of spice
was burned in
the temples.
The rich
merchandise of the East, plodded
with caravans bearing
spices driven by
camels along the routes of
Indian coast and
the Orient to the
spice market in
Nineveh, Babylon, Cartilage,
Alexandria and Rome.
Spices like pepper
and cloves were
bought from India, cinnamon
and nutmeg from
Spice Island, ginger collected
from China.
Later on for
centuries ship sailed
along the India
Coast past the
pirate filled PersianGulf
along the coast
of S.Arabia and
through RedSea to
Eygpt. Those were the typical ways
of bringing spices
from the Orient
to the western
world in ancient
times. Shipwreck and
storms brought large
losses, there were constant
robberies, but were
out weighed by
the eventual profit,
for spices were
in great demand
during highly developed
Greek and Roman
Era.
